As I scrolled, I realized that it was back to school already for much of New Jersey. This was news to me as my children are actually grown, and my memories of summer vacation always ended with one marathon night of watching the MDA telethon on TV (and trying to stay awake for all of it) followed by the first day of school the day after Labor Day. Those days are apparently long gone!
A brief search tells me that schools across the country start anywhere from July to September these days, and honestly I felt sad for the kids. Summer vacation was a magical time that's apparently long gone, as is unstructured play (you mom telling you to go out and play and you stayed out, unsupervised, until dinner time).
When did it all change?
I have to admit, that it does make sense, especially with quickly changing severe weather patterns, snow days, etc. And, time marches on.
The good news is, on the Labor Day Weekend, some school districts will have their first break of the school year for the holiday. I hope the kids enjoy the time off!
