Wayback Wednesday: Shemp Howard
March 11th marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Shemp Howard of the Three Stooges. Born Samuel Horwitz in Manhattan, and raised in Brooklyn…he was called Shemp because that’s the way Sam came out in his mother’s thick Litvak accent. He was the oldest of the Howard brothers, as they became known, and worked as one of the Stooges from the early 1920’s until 1932, and then from 1946 until his death in 1955. In between, Shemp had a successful solo film career. He came back to the 3 Stooges when his youngest brother, Curly Howard suffered a series of debilitating strokes.
On Wayback Wednesday we’ve got a collection of Slaps, Smacks, and Pokes, all in features that included Shemp.
