Wayback Wednesday: BRUCE
September 23rd is the 71st birthday of Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen…The Boss! Born at Monmouth Medical
Center in Long Branch, Bruce was raised in Freehold, and is of Dutch, Irish, and Italian ancestry. Bruce says he grew up hearing Frank Sinatra on the radio, and became interested in being a musician when, at the age of 7, he saw Elvis Presley perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. He then bought his first guitar when he saw the Beatles on the same show in 1964.
After playing in several bands on the Jersey Shore scene from the mid 1960’s, he auditioned for Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond in May, 1972. After being signed to the label, he formed a new band for his first album, which eventually became the E Street Band.
Bruce has sold over 150 million records worldwide, has over 20 Grammy Awards, 2 Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award for Springsteen on Broadway. And Bruce has just this week announced his first new record with the E Street Band since 2014!
Wayback Wednesday salutes “The Boss” with a live performance of “Hungry Heart” from when it was new in 1980. Happy Birthday Bruce!
