Wayback Wednesday: Zager and Evans
50 years ago this week man went to the Moon for the first time. The Apollo 11 mission launched on July 16th, 1969, and our astronauts set foot on the Moon’s surface the night of July 20th. Wondering what the Number 1 song was as that was happening…so were we! Marking its first week at #1 ironically, was a song painting a pretty bleak picture of man’s future…In The Year 2525 by Zager and Evans! It replaced One by 3 Dog Night in the top spot in New York.
On WABC, Zager and Evans stayed on top for 4 weeks, succeeded by a much more optimistic Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells. Zager and Evans became the ultimate One-Hit Wonders. After this huge hit, they never had another song chart on the Billboard Top 100! Check out this well produced video of In the Year 2525!
