Jimmy Buffett Broadway Musical Soundtrack Due Out February 16
Jimmy Buffett has set a February 16 date for the release of the original cast recording for his musical Escape To Margaritaville — the same day it makes its Broadway debut at the Marquis Theatre.
Buffett created the musical comedy with director Christopher Ashley, writers Greg Garcia and Mike O’Malley and choreographer Kelly Devine. It features a selection of originals Buffett wrote specifically for the production along with Buffett favorites such as “Cheeseburger In Paradise,” “Come Monday” and “Volcano.”
In a statement, Buffett says that, “I always felt that an album should be a musical journey, and I have made a few of them. The amazing thing to me about this project is that the collection of classic and new songs, chosen from a treasure chest of material, never perceived by yours truly as such a journey, became one. It is a strange and wonderful feeling to hear your songs sung by others with the new and exciting mission to create a melodic shop in which the story of ‘Escape To Margaritaville’ can sail…I have been listening to the cast sing these songs from the front of the house, which is a strange seat for me, for the past several months…I marvel at how our crew and their interpretations of both classic and new songs are taking the good ship Margaritaville towards a new and exciting port of call — Broadway.”
Buffett’s Mailboat Records label will be releasing the cast album.
Escape To Margaritaville premiered in May at the La Jolla Playhouse in California and went on to play in New Orleans and Houston. It’s currently running at the Oriental Theater in Chicago through December 2.
