The Kansas City Chiefs released the following statement in response to the shooting at their Super Bowl parade celebration today (Feb. 14):
“We are truly saddened by the senseless act of violence that occurred outside of Union Station at the conclusion of today’s parade and rally.
Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all of Kansas City.
We are in close communication with the Mayor’s office as well as the Kansas City Police Department.
At this time, we have confirmed that all of our players, coaches, staff and their families are safe and accounted for.
We thank the local law enforcement officers and first responders who were on-scene to assist.”
The New York Times reports at least 22 people sustained gunshot wounds from the shooting. Among the wounded are nine children.
Original Story
The Super Bowl parade celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs was marred by a shooting that resulted in at least one death and multiple injuries.
Multiple outlets — including NBC News, The Washington Post and CNN — said Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins confirmed the one death. Chief Hopkins noted three people were in critical condition, five people were in serious condition and one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries. So far, a total of 14 injuries have been confirmed.
The Associated Press noted that unseasonably warm temperatures in the 60s likely helped attract more fans to the parade. It is estimated about 1 million people attended the Feb. 14 Super Bowl celebration.
The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department issued the following statement:
“At the conclusion of the Chiefs rally, shots were fired west of Union Station. We have detained two armed suspects. There are multiple victims. We ask anyone who witnessed the shooting to go to the southwest corner of Pershing and Main. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Kansas City PD has informed those at the parade who were separated from their children that Union Station is the only location for child reunification.
Now the only child reunification location is inside Union Station.
