Elton John Auctioning Off Collection of Items from His Atlanta Home
Elton John is partnering with Christie’s New York on an upcoming auction of over 900 lots from his home in Atlanta.
Sir Elton bought his home in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood on Peachtree Road shortly after getting sober in 1990. In fact, the auction is named “The Collection of Sir Elton John: Goodbye Peachtree Road.” Christie’s notes the residence acted as John’s East Coast home while touring extensively. The home also housed his massive art collection, among other possessions.
When speaking about his art collection, Sir Elton told Christie’s, “It may not be everyone’s taste, but it’s certainly my taste. My apartment in Atlanta was like my man cave full of things that I loved, mementos from everywhere in the world, things that gave me inspiration every day.”
So, what’s all up for auction? In short: A wide-ranging collection of items only someone like Elton John could collect over the years. His art collection up for bid features work by Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring, Banksy, Herb Ritts, Helmut Hewton, Sol Lewitt and many more.
In addition to the art, some of John’s other personal items will go up for bid. Among them are his black 1990 Bentley continental convertible and many, many lots containing multiple Gianni Versace silk shirts.
The public exhibition for these items takes place at Christie’s New York February 9-21. Meanwhile, a live auction of certain items will run February 21-23, while a number of lots are up from auction online February 9-28. Complete auction details, including a full listing of all lots, is available at Christies.com.
Elton’s EGOT
Besides this major auction, the biggest thing that’s happening in Sir Elton’s world is his recent win at the 75th Annual Emmy Awards.
On Monday (Jan. 15), John won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). With this win, the music legend is now an EGOT winner. What’s an EGOT? It’s an acronym for an entertainer who has won an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award, an Oscar and a Tony Award.
Before this week’s Emmy win, John won five Grammy Awards in his career. In 2000, he won a Tony Award for Best Original Score for Aida. Additionally, John has won two Oscars. The first came in 1994 for Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King. The second Oscar came in 2020 for “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman.
