Journey Drama Update: Jonathan Cain Will Tour with Band, Steve Perry Drops Lawsuit
Journey has been a unique source of drama for months. Here’s the latest about the issues with the band.
Jonathan Cain is hitting the road with Journey on their upcoming tour
There has been plenty of fighting between guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain. In fact, Schon shared earlier this month founding Journey keyboardist/singer Gregg Rolie will be making an appearance on the tour, which kicks off January 27. This has led to speculation that Cain might be exiting the band. However, Cain shared a photo of himself and his wife, Paula White-Cain, on social media along with the caption, “I feel very grateful and blessed to share this time on the slopes with my Baby before hitting the road with Journey.”
Steve Perry Drops Trademark Lawsuit
In September 2022, Steve Perry filed a petition against former Journey bandmates Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain over trademark registrations of 20 popular Journey songs.
According to the paperwork filed with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the trademark registrations of the 20 Journey songs were for the use of creating clothing merchandise. Some of the merchandise types listed include t-shirts, hats, jackets, hoodies, socks and more. Some of Journey’s most popular songs were part of these trademark registrations including “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways,” “Anyway You Want It,” “Wheel In The Sky” and more.
Perry’s petition claimed Schon and Cain did not consult him about these trademark registrations. Perry claims he should have been notified of the registrations per a previous legal agreement they had relating to various Journey compositions that were created when Perry was still in the band.
On January 7, Schon shared a screenshot of the withdrawal of Perry’s petition. He captioned it, “So much for JC [Jonathan Cain] trying to throw me under the bus as he claimed I was blatantly trying to rip off SP [Steve Perry] while collecting the checks for the very diligent work my wife and I did to protect our Merch. Time for coffee.”
