There Are Now Gender-Neutral Playing Cards With No Kings Or Queens
Indy Mellink, a woman from the Netherlands, has recently created a new style of cards that is getting quite a bit of attention.
Per the New York Post, she created a gender-neutral deck of playing cards. She had the idea after explaining a game to her cousins last summer. While doing so, she thought, “why should a king be worth more than a queen?”
She explained her thought process in an interview, saying, “If we have this hierarchy that the king is worth more than the queen then this subtle inequality influences people in their daily life because it’s just another way of saying ‘Hey, you’re less important.’ Even subtle inequalities like this do play a big role.”
Indy’s cards are genderless, and the kings, queens, and jacks have been replaced with cards with gold bars, silver coins, and bronze shields.
The GSB cards have been quite popular, and so far, she has sold over 1500 decks. She adds that many game shops have also shown interest in the product.
GSB cards can be purchased on the website.
