Common Struggles: Things That Seem Easy But Are Difficult For You
Have you ever watched someone effortlessly whip up a soufflé or flawlessly parallel park in one try and wondered why these seemingly simple tasks feel like navigating a labyrinth for you? For me, trying to snap my fingers falls into this category of skills. While others can snap away without missing a beat.
Someone took it to Reddit to discuss this, asking, “What is something that seems easy to other people, but is difficult for you?” It was refreshing to see someone admit that they’re not too great at conversations. “Knowing when to jump in and out of conversations. I’m either rude for interrupting or rude for not talking.”
Things that seem easy to others, but are difficult for you
One person pointed out how they have trouble rolling their “R’s.” Another person chimed in, writing, “The best part of this one is if you tell someone about it, they will just do it in front of you like that will somehow magically make you able to do it. Same with whistling.”
I would say this one is very relatable. Mainly because math isn’t my strong suit. Yes, even basic math. I still tend to use my fingers to subtract and add. But before any judgments, I’m not alone on this. One person shared how they find it fascinating that many people are good at quick basic math, while they are not.
Hula-hopping made the thread. “I’ve tried for years, I totally understand the concept, I just can’t get the hoop to hula,” they said. As someone who can hula-hoop, it didn’t come naturally, just years of practice.
Someone jokingly said, “Cutting in a straight line with scissors.’ They continued to say, “I must’ve missed that day in Kindergarten.” That may be true for a lot of people.
There were some other responses from people who didn’t quite get the assignment of the thread. Some people put things like finding a partner, getting quality sleep, making and maintaining friends, controlling emotions, time management, and others.
The takeaway
While one person may effortlessly pick up a new skill, another might struggle despite putting in plenty of effort, study, and practice. That’s perfectly fine. Everyone has their own strengths and things they find challenging.
After many years of doing sports like track and competitive cheerleading, I’ve learned that if you find something difficult, be patient with yourself. The journey to mastering a skill is just as important as reaching that goal.
