‘Secret Invasion’ Episode 3: Fury’s Wife + His New Hobby
In the third episode of Secret Invasion, the Skrull resistance continues their undercover invasion. And Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) continues to pull the strings. We already know that he is the leader of the resistance group and he now also leads the Skrull Council. In a plotline that might be a bit too on the nose for some, he points out that humans are always at each other’s throats – giving the Skrulls an opportunity: “We’re gonna break their backs.” Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) has also made the point of humans not being able to coexist. Gravik already made the bombing of Moscow look like it was done by Americans. Now that humans are on high alert, it’s the perfect time for the Skrulls to make their move. Kingsley Ben-Adir’s character portrayal of Gravik is really well done, as he can pull off the cold-blooded villain role.
Skrull Advancements
In episode 2, Dr. Rosa Dalton (Katie Finneran) was working in a lab on something to help the Skrulls. In episode 3, titled “Betrayed,” we learn that the research would create “Super Skrulls” with superpowers on top of their shapeshifting abilities. With millions of them roaming the Earth pretty much undetected, this will be a major problem for Fury now. It’s one thing to mimic the Hulk or Wanda or Spider-Man’s look. But if they can mimic their powers, that’s an even bigger threat.

Before we get to that, we learn more about Nick Fury’s Skrull wife, whom we met at the end of episode 2. In episode 2’s flashback, where we met Gravik as a child, there were hints that Fury’s wife, Priscilla (Charlayne Woodard), was also a Skrull. In another flashback, this time in 1998 New York City, Fury meets a young Priscilla. We quickly find out she is a Skrull because Fury doesn’t recognize her human form. Fast-forward to the present day and Fury’s wife is (understandably) one of the many people upset with Fury. She mourned him when she thought he died after “The Blip” (as seen in the post-credits scene in Avengers: Infinity War). But after he returned and then left Earth, that hurt even more. This conversation clearly pains Fury… but he is suspicious of his wife.
Conversations
G’iah (Emilia Clarke) is double-crossing Gravik. But Gravik can see through anyone’s lies. The ones he’s caught so far have paid the price with their lives. As he becomes increasingly aware of a rat in their small crew, Gravik puts pressure on and questions G’iah — and he doesn’t look too convinced. When he feeds her information about attacking the UN plane, it so obviously looks like a trap for her to leak the information. But she took the bait. Meanwhile, Talos tries to school Gravik, who cannot see anything else but his own plans for handling humans. Perpetuating the thought that humans just kill each other anyway, Talos disagrees. He tells Gravik humans are at their “most formidable when they’re threatened by a common foe.” The arrogant Gravik isn’t moved at all and completely believes in the Skrulls’ powers. That means nothing if Talos tries to tell the humans of his plans, but would they even believe him?
Teamwork
In episode one, Fury got pissed off at Talos for lying about how many Skrulls are actually on Earth. Since then, the two friends have been on rocky ground. Pushing his pride aside, Fury has no choice but to apologize to Talos to continue their shared interest in stopping the Skrull invasion. Fury and Talos easily get back to normal. Talos notes that he doesn’t understand the relationship between humans and dogs, and asks if any other species regularly picks up another species’ poop. Fury snaps back: “I’ve been cleaning up your poop for the last 30-some years. Ah, the truth’s a mother dog, right?” Talos takes him down a notch to let Fury know he wouldn’t have been a successful S.H.I.E.L.D. agent without the Skrulls spy network. While there has definitely been some action scenes in this series, it really shines in one-on-one conversations, like the one between Fury and Rhodey (Don Cheadle) last episode, or Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) in the premiere.
