Meet the Nurses at Morristown Medical Center

Wendy Silverstein Nurse Manager- Nursing Education Wendy Silverstein is responsible for the Magnet Recognition Program, Shared Governance, and the Nursing Education department at Morristown Medical Center  Magnet is a clinical excellence award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center which recognizes health care organizations that provide nursing excellence. Only a small percentage of hospitals achieve this recognition. Morristown Medical Center just received their 5th Magnet designation. Shared Governance promotes joint accountability and responsibility for making decisions that affect the nursing practice and was introduced to improve nurses' work environment, satisfaction, and retention. Wendy’s nursing education staff is responsible for Nursing Orientation, the nursing component of the biomedical skills lab, and acts as a liaison with various schools of nursing in New Jersey. We are also responsible for a new nurse residency program that has been accredited with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Roxanne Sabatini, MSN, RN-BC, Nurse Educator at Morristown Medical Center She coordinates the initial nursing orientation for all new nurses to the facility. Roxane is the program director for the ANCC accredited Hire Learning Nurse Residency program for all newly licensed nurses at the hospital. Under O'Keefe's leadership, Morristown Medical Center was the only hospital in New Jersey named one of America’s ‘50 Best Hospitals’ for three consecutive years by Healthgrades, rated the number one hospital in the state by both U.S. News & World Report and Castle Connolly, named one of the World’s Best Hospitals (the 28th best hospital in the United States and number one in New Jersey) by Newsweek, and named to Becker's Healthcare 2018 list of "100 great hospitals in America.” Leapfrog recognized the medical center with an “A” hospital safety grade—its highest—eight consecutive times, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recognized the medical center with its highest five-star rating again in 2019. Morristown Medical Center is nationally recognized in cardiology, orthopedics, critical care, nursing, and gastroenterology—a testament to the quality O’Keefe expects. She was instrumental in the medical center’s prestigious designation as an American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence five consecutive times-one of less than one percent of hospitals nationally to achieve this honor. She is executively responsible for Atlantic Health System’s Cardiology, Orthopedic, Women’s Health, Pediatric, and Oncology Service Lines. She is also coordinating a systemwide approach for Atlantic Health System nursing and patient experience. O'Keefe is a noted presenter on national and regional stages on topics such as redesigning healthcare, empowerment and shared governance models, achieving Magnet status, resiliency in leadership, transitions in health care, nursing's role in the Accountable Care Organization (ACO), geriatric care and medication management, care for the caregiver, and recruitment and retention. She has been recognized at the United Nations as one of 21 Nurses with Global Impact, by Irish America magazine to its Healthcare and Life Sciences 50 list, by the American Cancer Society as a Hero of Hope, by NJ Biz as a 2018 Vanguard Series Leader in Health Care, by Seton Hall University with the Margaret C. Haley Award for making a significant contribution to healthcare, by the Morris County Chamber of Commerce as a “Woman Who Shines,” received the UMDNJ Dean's Award for Advancing the Profession of Nursing, and the ONE/NJ Nurse Executive of the Year Award and Professional Recognition Award. She is also the recipient of the Mary A. Mulholland Service Award from the Boy Scouts of America and was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award from DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, NJ. O'Keefe currently serves as Chair, Morris County Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of Seton Hall University President’s Advisory Board. She also is a member of the Morris County Strategic Planning Committee. She has served on the Board of Directors for the NJ Sharing Network, Organization of Nurse Executives in New Jersey (ONE/NJ) for 10 years and recently served as the Advisory Board Chair for the Salvation Army of Morris County, and Board Member of the College of Saint Elizabeth in Madison, New Jersey. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE), the New Jersey Organization of Nurse Executives (ONE/NJ), and Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing. O'Keefe is a certified nurse administrator by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, her Master of Science Degree in Nursing Administration, and received her PhD from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. [audio mp3="https://wmtram.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/12/2019/05/Trish-OKeefe-Final.mp3"][/audio] Carol Jones Chief Nursing Officer Under Carol’s leadership, Morristown Medical Center has now received its fifth consecutive Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), part of an elite group of less than one percent of hospitals with this designation. During her tenure, she successfully developed the hospital’s trauma program, including the designation as a Level 1 Trauma Center by the American College of Surgery, six times. She designed and implemented the Rapid Treatment Unit, Injury Prevention Program and planned five emergency department renovations while managing significant volume growth. She has presented nationally and regionally on topics such as emergency nursing, trauma care and injury prevention and was a founding member of the New Jersey Disaster Assistance Team NJ-1. In 2018, Carol helped lead the implementation of the Epic Electronic Health Record, which was rolled out to all Atlantic Health System sites. This required massive technological and cultural transformation and Carol and her team ensured seamless care coordination for patients Carol actively works to adapt and change traditional nursing care delivery models to meet evolving approaches to care, elevating the nursing role and its critical role in the care continuum. Carol was instrumental in the development and opening of The Center for Nursing Innovation and Research—a designated space for nurses to design and conduct nursing research to improve patient outcomes, explore evidence-based practice, and create innovations for nurses within Atlantic Health System and across the nation. Nurses can explain challenges and explore options for improvement in an environment that fully encourages brainstorming, hands-on drawing or building equipment, and open dialogue about process change – all focused on improving patient outcomes.
