Social psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky recently shared with CNN that it is possible to adjust one’s baseline level of happiness. “You can’t change your genetics,” she noted. She also pointed out that altering life circumstances—such as changing jobs or starting new relationships—has its limits, especially if one is not in a critical situation.
“And so what do we have left? We can change how we think and how we behave,” she said. “We can change our habits. We can develop new habits.”
Lyubomirsky and other researchers have observed that people who are consistently happy tend to practice certain habits.

If you’re not sure where to start, one of their experts offered several ideas, such as paying the toll for the car behind you, picking up litter in your area, rescuing a stray animal, visiting a nursing home, helping someone carry a heavy package, doing a household chore that isn’t your responsibility, and others.
Another highlight on their list is the importance of nurturing your relationships. Regarding your happiness, personal connections have a greater influence than money, job titles, or even health. “Spending more quality time with your partner, spouse, or kids, or reconnecting with old friends, are sure-fire ways to boost both your own and others’ average levels of joy,” one expert explained.
Many people follow this quite often, but one expert mentioned taking stock of the positive things in your life. They said that expressing gratitude will encourage you to appreciate your good fortune and help get you through the rest of the day or week.
