Washington Redskins Announce Temporary Name After Dropping Redskins
The NFL team formerly known as the Washington Redskins will have a temporary new name for the 2020-2021 season – Washington Football Team. The team confirmed the news with a statement Thursday.
“For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the ‘Washington Football Team’ pending adoption of our new name,” the statement from the team said. “The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season. We encourage fans, media and all other parties to use ‘Washington Football Team’ immediately.”
After substantial pressure from multiple groups, team owner Dan Snyder announced on July 3 that the team would drop the Redskins moniker immediately.
The team released several uniform concepts, and field designs for the coming year given the change.
“Starting tomorrow and over the next 50 days, we will begin the process of retiring all Redskins branding from team properties whether it be FedExField, Redskins Park, other physical and digital spaces,” the team said. “We hope to complete this process in full by the team’s home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 13.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the news Thursday, and showcased the branding the team will use.

The change is temporary, and no time frame has been announced for a permanent change, but likely would not come before the 2021 season. Merchandise will be available soon under the “Washington Football Team” name, the statement said.
