Community Commemoration of 9/11
September 12, 2011 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM
Conference Center, 118 Lamington Road, BranchburgThe public is invited to Raritan Valley Community College’s (RVCC) special Community Commemoration of 9/11, to be held Monday, September 12, from noon-1 p.m. The event, which is free of charge, will be held in the Conference Center at the College’s Branchburg Campus. The program will feature a screening of a documentary, REBIRTH. The film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011, is the result of a decade-long project by director Jim Whitaker. The film offers a living history and personal witness to one of the most profound events in American history, 9/11, and the healing that has come in its wake. REBIRTH chronicles the lives of four people directly affected by 9/11. Their narratives express the mixture of recovery and resiliency from grief, loss and trauma, which are the messages of the film. The New York Times describes REBIRTH as “a record of recovery, without narration, graphic images or expert opinions, but shot through with the poetry of deeply felt emotions.” In addition to the film screening, the RVCC commemoration will include a panel composed of a 9/11 first-responder who is a graduate of RVCC; an RVCC student whose father worked in one of the towers and survived the experience; an RVCC staff member whose family members were first-responders; and a psychologist who was a consultant to the film.
