The New Jersey Economic Development Authority Board approved up to $39.8 million in state tax credits last week for Liberty Science Center's Project Supernova. The institution plans to add animals, exhibition space, mini-golf, and a high school to its Bergen-Lafayette campus.

Liberty Science Center calls Project Supernova a "far-reaching transformation" of the center's programs and facilities. The funding will help expand operations at the current site in Jersey City.

“This project is a vibrant fusion of science, ecology, and culture. It's presented through new immersive environments that are interactive and educational, and upgrades to existing iconic experiences that LSC is famous for,” said Liberty Science Center CEO Paul Hoffman in a statement. “The project celebrates the intersection of science and culture, honoring New Jersey's famous scientific legacy and natural ecosystems.”

Live animals will arrive on campus for the first time. Goats and otters join the mix, creating fresh ways for visitors to learn.

A new high school will join the complex as part of this transformation, operating alongside current museum programs that have served thousands of students.

Additional exhibition space will give the center room to grow its offerings. Mini-golf will provide another attraction for families visiting the facility.

The state tax credits represent a significant investment in the Bergen-Lafayette area, coming through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, which supports projects across the state.

For decades, the center has operated in Jersey City. It serves as a leading educational resource for students and families throughout the region.

Project Supernova marks the largest expansion in the facility's history. Changes will affect how the institution serves its community.

The approval came during a board meeting. Officials reviewed the proposal before voting to grant the tax credit package.

Construction timelines and opening dates remain unannounced. More details about Project Supernova will emerge as planning moves forward.
