A Target store under construction in West Orange appears to be close to opening. The company hasn't announced a date. Red coloring appeared on the building at 235 Prospect Ave. as of Nov. 4, but workers haven't installed signage or the trademark red balls outside the front doors.
The parking lot has been paved and marked with lines. Construction began in the spring before Target confirmed the new spot.
The building sits where a Kmart once stood until 2020. Essex County converted that space into a vaccination center when COVID-19 hit. Eagle Rock Reservation sits nearby. A Whole Foods anchors one part of the plaza, with Chipotle and Jersey Mike's filling other spaces.
"As we get closer to opening the store, we'll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date," a spokesperson wrote in an email to NorthJersey.com on Nov. 4.
Pal's Cabin once operated across the street for 81 years. Liberace visited. So did Babe Ruth and Bob Hope. That establishment closed in 2013, and a CVS replaced it.
The West Orange building will cover about 150,000 square feet. Company representatives said they look forward to serving residents.
"We're excited to bring an easy, affordable, and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the West Orange community," the spokesperson wrote.
Target.com lists several job openings for the West Orange site. One other store operates in Essex County on Route 46 in Fairfield.
