Rutgers Launches Mobile Health Clinic for Newark’s Homeless Population
A new mobile health clinic now travels Newark’s streets four days a week, bringing essential care to homeless residents. This Rutgers University van delivers medical help directly to those who need it most.
Inside, a dedicated team, including nurses, social workers, and outreach staff, handles both immediate health issues and mental health screenings. They help connect people to additional care services when necessary.
“Even though our clinic is literally on the street, we still want to maintain as much privacy as possible, so our patients can have a secure space to talk,” said Kamineni, the lead nurse aboard the city of Newark’s Homeless Outreach Medical Unit. to Mirage News. “That’s why our mobile unit is here.”
This project works alongside “The Path Home,” Mayor Ras Baraka’s initiative combining housing support with health services. With Newark Alliance funding, city officials plan to add two more units to the streets.
The harsh reality: homeless individuals often die 30 years earlier than people with housing. Mental health issues and substance use make regular doctor visits practically impossible for many.
Building trust happens through regular contact, just ask the team about their success story who kept returning after leaving the hospital. These victories show how street-based care breaks barriers.
By connecting housing, job opportunities, and healthcare, Mayor Baraka’s strategy tackles homelessness comprehensively. The van fits naturally into this broader initiative for change.
The program’s success could inspire similar efforts nationwide. Other cities are watching closely, hoping to replicate effective strategies in their own communities where housing and health challenges intersect.
National statistics support the emphasis on mental health. When healthcare providers go mobile, they reach people who would never visit a traditional clinic.
Going to where people are making a real difference. Instead of sitting in offices, team members actively find those most in need of help.
