Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck Releasing New LP Together, Drop Preview Single
Johnny Depp and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck joined forces back in 2020 with the release of the John Lennon cover “Isolation,” and now, and the actor/musician and two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer are releasing an album together.
Due out July 15 is Beck and Depp’s album 18, a collection of diverse covers and two songs written by Depp. One of them, “This Is A Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr,” pays tribute to the actress and notable inventor, whose work in developing radio guidance systems would help lead to the creation of Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi technology used today.
Beck said of the track, “I was blown away by it. That song is one of the reasons I asked him to make an album with me.” Beck would add about Depp, “I haven’t had another creative partner like him for ages. He was a major force on this record. I just hope people will take him seriously as a musician because it’s a hard thing for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.”
Depp is a respected guitar player; he originally came to Hollywood to become a musician, not an actor. In the ’90s, he played guitar in a band called P, which also included Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes. More recently, he played in the Hollywood Vampires with Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Alice Cooper. But generally, his musical contribution is his guitar playing, not his singing.
As for the album itself, it features 13 tracks (including the aforementioned Lennon cover), but it’s titled 18. Why? Beck said, “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and creativity. We would joke about how we felt 18 again so that just became the album title too.”
Depp would add of his new partnership with Beck, “It’s an extraordinary honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the true greats and someone I am now privileged enough to call my brother.”
18 is currently available for pre-sale on digital platforms here and for pre-order at JeffBeckOfficialStore.com in vinyl and CD formats. A full tracklisting is below.
