Classic Oldies News

Promotional portrait of popular music and television group the Monkees, dressing in tuxedos and they as they sit in folding chair and look over their shoulders, early 1970s. From left, British musician and actor Davy Jones, and American musician and actors Mickey Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Michael Nesmith. The chairs are labeled with the band's guitar-shaped logo and the name of each member.

For fans of The Monkees, December 30th is a big day: It’s the birthday of both Davy Jones and Michael Nesmith!

Critics be damned, The Monkees put out some of the best pop songs of the 60s.  (They certainly had some of the best songwriters at their disposal. Looking at you Neil Diamond!)  So, in honor of Jones and Nesmith, we look at six tracks that we think are essentials in the Monkees catalog and should be cranked loudly today.

“Last Train To Clarksville”

The Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville 1966

A re-edited song from The Monkees TV series. This is from episode 2 with adds from episode 3 and live shot from episode 32. This completes all editing of songs from the first season of the TV series.

“Steppin’ Stone”

The Monkees - Steppin' Stone

This is the Monkees 1966 hit single "Steppin' Stone" which I edited to match the full length single. This is my very first video project in which syncing the audio with the video was tricky.

“Daydream Believer”

The Monkees - Daydream Believer (Official Music Video)

You're watching the official music video for The Monkees timeless hit 'Daydream Believer'. CHRISTMAS PARTY, the first holiday album by The Monkees, is available now https://rhino.lnk.to/ChristmasParty

“I’m A Believer”

The Monkees- I'm a Believer

I'm a Believer from the Monkees episode 'One Man Shy'

“Mary Mary”

The Monkees - Mary Mary 1967

This is from episode 25 with some re-editing to cut out the beginning video section of where the overlap from the audio track from the song starts while the episode ends.

“Valleri”

The Monkees - Valleri (Remix)

This is the 1966 video re-edited to match the 1968 full version released in 1986 on Arista Records.
