1800 – 1800 United States presidential election The Electoral College casts votes for President and Vice President that resulted in a tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Under the terms laid out in the Constitution, the outgoing House of Representatives chose between Jefferson and Burr. It took 36 ballots to finally elect Jefferson over Burr.
