1954 – The United States Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. It was a landmark decision of the Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that American state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools are unconstitutional, even if the segregated schools are otherwise equal in quality.

2004 – The first legal same-sex marriages in the U.S. are performed in the state of Massachusetts
