October 10th marks the birth anniversary of filmmaker and author Edward D. Wood Jr., better known as Ed Wood. In the 50’s Wood produced low budget science fiction, horror, and comedy films, intercutting stock footage. Later he turned to sexploitation films in the 60’s and 70’s. He also authored 80 pulp crime, horror, and sex novels.
In 1975 he was awarded the Golden Turkey as the Worst Director of All Time, which renewed public interest in his work. His life and wacky work were dramatized in Tim Burton’s 1994 biopic Ed Wood, which starred Johnny Depp in the title role.
If you’ve never seen an Ed Wood movie, you’ll get an idea of what they were like in this trailer for a film that’s been called “the worst movie of all time”…Plan Nine From Outer Space, released in 1959. Check this out on Wayback Wednesday!
