1932 – German-born Swiss physicist Albert Einstein is granted an American visa, having become a refugee after his cottage was burned by Nazis.  A German magazine had also placed a $5,000 bounty on his head, calling him "not yet hanged."

1955 – E. D. Nixon and Rosa Parks lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
